What a great group of lambs we have this year! It’s hard to choose who we’d want sell. We used VAI as well as 3 rams; all 3 have given us some outstanding lambs. As we do every year, quality and prices on lambs will be determent as they get older and evaluations have been made. We will then see who will meet our standards as breeding stock, and who will be sold as a fiber pet or for meat market. The only loss we had was with our ewe lamb moms that had twins. Our beautiful Hefna’s twins were large rams, born at night without me. I didn’t do the nightly checking; no one looked ready to give birth. That morning Hefna wasn’t able to get up for hours, and called to her lambs for days. What a sad thing it is to see a ewe mourn her lambs. This was my biggest mistake this lambing season, assuming is never to be done at lambing time! The third lamb we lost was also a big ram, his brother took too long coming out, and Frida didn’t want any of my help. This lamb simply didn’t get oxygen and was born dead. We no longer have to sell VAI lambs only to Scrapie enrolled flocks, the new rule frees us to sell AI lambs to any flock, and that is great news!
